THE CIRCLE JOURNAL

An immersive journaling experience that explores the relationship between physical and digital interactions to enhance the user’s meditation experience. The guided journey incorporates a physical journal and app that work together to promote chakra balancing.

01 BACKGROUND & CONTEXT

Chakra means “wheel” and is derived from Hinduism philosophy that believes there are several energy points in our body. Imbalanced chakras can cause physical and emotional health problems.

Chakra meditation aims to unblock and balance the chakras to the right alignment in our body. How many individuals from Gen Z are aware of chakra meditation and its benefits?

The physical journal incorporates elements of augmented reality to enhance the user’s overall understanding of the concept and provide a variety of exercises to elicit a state of mindfulness.

02 GOALS

︎︎︎ How do we encourage Gen Z to learn about chakra meditation and incorporate it into their lifestyle?

︎︎︎ Identifying how technology can enhance an individual’s journey to mindfulness and balanced chakras by carefully weaving together a user flow.

︎︎︎ Building a culture and community of wellness through appropriate social interaction.

︎︎︎ Exploring my roots by diving deep into spirituality in Hinduism.

03 PRIMARY DATA & RESEARCH

I interviewed my target audience to understand what was missing in their lifestyle and whether they felt that the project would positively impact them. This helped me design solutions that aligned with the project’s goals and met the needs of the user.

04 USER FLOW

I made a rough user flow diagram to understand where

01 - Chakra positioning

The user will scan the image tracker to open a face filter that places the chakras in front of them. Through augmented reality, the user can understand the different chakra positions as they are mapped to various parts of their body.

02 - Enter the chakra realm

To enhance ‘colour therapy’ and make the user feel immersed in the meditation experience, they will scan the coloured circle at the beginning of each chapter to digitally enter the realm. This process helps the user situate themselves in the environment around them and feel the contrast between the physical and digital.

03 - Mandala meditation with friends

The user will scan the visualization meditation cue and create mandala drawings on p5.js. The sketch allows the user to experiment with different brush weights and colours to draw symmetrical patterns which are shared via the app.
04 - Saving journal entries to the app

Each chakra chapter has a section for journaling where the user will reflect and write down answers for prompts. This encourages a non-digital pen to paper interaction that can later be scanned and saved to the app. Users can access their journal entries at any time, making the experience accessible from anywhere, at anytime.

05 - Yoga Asanas

Towards the end of balancing the chakra, the user will perform five essential yoga asanas by scanning the illustrations in the journal. The image tracker will open up a guided meditation audio that describes how to complete the yoga asana. The audio allows the user to put their phone to the side as they build a mind-body connection.

05 STYLE GUIDE & DESIGN PROCESS

I interviewed my target audience to understand what was missing in their lifestyle and whether they felt that the project would positively impact them. This helped me design solutions that aligned with the project’s goals and met the needs of the user.

06 FEEDBACK AND NEXT STEPS

Due to Adobe Aero software constraints, I had to replace video with audio narration of the yoga poses, which sometimes made it difficult for the users to visualize how to complete the pose. Users also mentioned there were glitches with the accuracy of the body tracking model that placed the chakras on the body.

The project invites reflection on the impact of technology in a practice where individuals might want to unplug and meditate. It is also important to consider how to maintain a collaborative and community based interaction, rather than competitive or toxic.
